SM My Recipe Cookfest Held in Lipa

The Lipa City leg of SM’s My Cuisine cooking competition was held last July 6, 2012 at the SM City mall. The Lipa leg featured separate competitions in cooking favorite Batangas dishes bulalo (a Filipino style beef stew) as the main entrée and pinindot (a snack made of glutinous rice balls and pearl tapioca cooked in coconut milk) as the dessert.

Previous legs were held in SM malls in Rosales, Pangasinan; Antipolo, Taytay and Marikina in Rizal; and Calamba in Laguna.

The Lipa competition attracted five Batangueño cooks each for the bulalo and pinindot competitions.

Vying to win the best bulalo title were Bryan Baldoz and Alvin King de Villa of Taal; Pamela Carvajal and Edgardo Magsino, both from Lipa City; and Willy Ballesteros, representing the Lipa City Colleges.

The competitors of the pinindot competition, meanwhile, were Emma Cuevas and Perla Mangunay of Lipa City; Lagring Balasbas and Socorro Malabanan of Taal; and Abba Abdiel Aguila of the Lipa City Colleges.

Kitchen equipment and basic ingredients for both the bulalo and pinindot competitions were provided by SM City Lipa. The contestants were given two hours to cook their specialties.

The participants were required to submit their original recipes to the organizers for the judges’ perusal.

Judging both competitions was an invited panel consisting of Bernadette Sabili, wife of the Mayor of Lipa City; Cora Alvino, formerly of the National Museum; Ruby Abella of SM Homeworld; Nina Maralit of Café de Lipa; and Rex Torrecampo of Food Batangas.

Criteria for judging included taste, faithfulness to the recipe, use of ingredients and presentation.

Each competitor gave samples of the finished dish to each judge for tasting. Some also prepared special food presentations for the judges’ consideration.

Chosen winner of the bulalo competition was Bryan Baldoz of Taal. Abba Abdiel Aguila of the Lipa City Colleges, meanwhile, was adjudged winner of the pinindot competition.

Prizes were awarded later in the afternoon during the launch of a Lipa City exhibition at the front lobby of the mall.
